Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

Miss-

Probably the biggest problem we have in our community is misinformation. This is partially due to the world in which we live. Misinformation is circulated by word of mouth or the various social websites available to our community. The POA does not participate in these websites for this reason. If you have an issue or a concern, attend our monthly meetings or send the office an email and we will provide clarification at the next meeting. Instead of focusing on the negatives, which is often misinformation, we should shift our focus to kindness and positives.

Emergencies

If you have an urgent issue or possible life-threatening issue call 911 and report the incident. If it is a nonemergency, tell the 911 operator it is not an emergency. The Sherriff's department will always respond. I would not recommend any resident attempt to intervene in a police matter. This could be at great risk to the resident. For everyone's information a "Citizens Arrest" is not legal in our state. The POA does not police our neighborhood or our streets, we too call 911.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are required to have a screen covering the fire. This is so embers or sparks will not start another fire. We live in a pine forest and the pine needles are a fire hazard. Starting a fire in our neighborhood could lead to a major disaster and the fire pit owner could be held liable for any and all property damages.

Dog Owners

Please remember to pick up after your dogs. Keep your dog on a leash when off your property and be respectful of everyone and their property.

Carolina Shores Golf Course

The golf course is "private property" and the fact that it is open to the public does not mean residents can use the course, golf cart paths, or ponds, for their own personal pleasure. The course is a "pay to play" area and not a public park. Many of us enjoy the views of the course, and all of us should try to support the course whenever possible. It's in our best interest. You do not have to be a golfer to support the course and there is also a nice grill open for lunch.

"The Gardener" author unknown

There was once an earnest gardener who loved his work and his produce. One day he was walking through his delightful garden and happened to notice a weed. The gardener was particularly tired so he decided to leave it.

The next day he had to leave to visit his relatives for two weeks. When he came back, the back yard was covered in weeds and all his produce was dead!

Likewise, if we allow just one bad thought in our head and fail to remove it, it will sprout and instead of having to pick one weed, we will have too much to control. If we destroy our negative thoughts, by allowing positive ones to grow, they will display in our personality like a beautiful garden.

That's the power of positive thought. We are, what our thoughts are. We should always entertain only good and positive thoughts in our mind and never give way for anything negative!

Be alert and conscious of your thoughts and pick out the weeds of your negative thoughts consciously and quickly, at the right moment.

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson

The ACC (Architectural Control Committee) is in charge of issuing permits for housing and improvements. The ACC Chairman manages a group of volunteers to accomplish this task and reports to the Board every month. All exterior changes such as painting, additions, repairs, new roofs, driveways, shutters, storm doors, fencing, and tree removal are a few examples of needing a permit. Our Declaration of Restrictions is the legal document that gives the POA authority. If you are a new resident, both your realtor and attorney are required by law to disclose these restrictions.

Violations that we are experiencing at this time are no roof permits, no fencing permits, painting without a permit and unkept yards. Also, please note that utility trailers are to be stored in a garage and cannot be stored anywhere else on your property. Please help us with these items. If you have any ACC questions, call the office.

Thank you – Brenda Edwards and Kirsten Forehand

“Thank you to everyone in the community who participated in the community yard sale on April 23. It was a great success because of all of you! We will continue to Improve with signage and advertising as we move forward. There have been many requests for a Fall sale and would like to make that happen, probably October.

Again… our community is great because of all of you!

Memorial Day Weekend Picnic

The annual POA Memorial Day Weekend Picnic is back and will be held this year on Sunday, May 29! Tickets will be available at the POA office from Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 13. Due to parking constraints, there is a limit of 325 tickets, so get yours early - first come, first served! (No tickets will be issued after the deadline and no one will be admitted without a ticket.)  Tickets are complimentary to POA residents only. Due to the continued growth of our neighborhood, we will not be able to accommodate outside guests at this event.

This year’s menu will consist of pork bar-b-que, fried chicken, cole slaw, baked beans, hush puppies/rolls, sweet and unsweet iced tea, and water - all catered by Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q of Shallotte. Bring any other beverage and sweet dessert that you might want. The time will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion and picnic grounds by the pool. Food will be served from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Also, as a friendly but important  reminder, if you pick up tickets and subsequently find that you are unable to attend, PLEASE return them to the POA office or call to cancel by May 16. In order to continue providing our residents with this activity, paid for by recreation funds, it is important that we only be charged for meals contracted with the caterer. After the final count is given, we are obligated for that amount. It is in all of our interests not to pay for “no-shows”.

Come join us for this fun, community-wide event!

Happy Hour in the Park

Happy Hour in the Park for the month of May will be held on Friday, May 20, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion and picnic grounds by the pool. This fun, very informal event happens on the third Friday of the month, weather permitting.

BYOB and any snacks or food items you may want and enjoy an early evening get-together. There are no organized plans - just an opportunity to meet our new neighbors you don’t know and connect with those you do.

Hope to see you there!

Carolina Shores Men’s Golf Association – Jim Ratcliff

Greetings from the men’s golf association. Looking to play golf with your friends and neighbors? We have been around for many years. We have approximately 45 members and play handicap golf every Friday at our local Carolina Shores golf and country club. We have members of all golfing abilities with handicaps from 2 to 36. During the winter months we meet at 8:30 a.m. and tee off at 9:00 a.m. As the weather grows warmer, we move earlier to meet the season incrementally up to an 8:00 tee time. We play various game formats each week, as decided upon by those members in charge for the week. Following our round of golf, we normally socialize for prizes, drinks, and food at the golf clubhouse. We also have spin off groups that play a stableford format on Wednesdays, Handicap format is also used on Mondays and Saturdays. You can come and play as much or as little as you like. We also fund charities through our golf game and provide Thanksgiving meals for many needy families and Christmas gifts for many needy children during the holiday period. We are veterans, friends and neighbors of Carolina Shores and surrounding communities. We look forward to meeting with you in the future. If you are interested, you can check in with Jennifer or Philip at the golf clubhouse or contact our president at: jnavsc@hotmail.com. You may also call our president, Jim Ratcliff 518-928-4932, with any questions. Leave a message and please understand if I don’t answer immediately as spam calls come frequently. I will make an effort to return your call asap.

Carolina Shores Bowling League – Jim Ratcliff

Goodday from the Carolina Shores Bowling League. Our league has just completed a very successful 2021-2022 bowling season. Our league, of 16 teams, bowled 26 weeks (Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.). Our league is mixed, requiring at least one member of the opposite sex on each team. It is a non-sanctioned league, costing only $16 weekly. Basically, you get a night out with friends and neighbors for $16, one night a week. We awarded over $7,000 in prizes this year and are looking forward to a growing new year. We understand that we have lots of new neighbors in Carolina Shores, and our neighboring communities, and are hopeful that some of you will be interested in joining our league for the 2022-2023 season. We are a handicapped league, with bowlers of all skill levels. Watch for our announcements in the monthly Carolina Shores bulletin, and the Nextdoor neighbors’ website. We will be organizing our league during a meeting at the bar and grill at Little River Lanes on August 30, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. Our Season begins on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. Don’t worry about the holidays, as we always take a break for Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks. We look forward to seeing a lot of new neighbors at our organizational meeting on August 30. If you have any questions, you can email me at jnavsc@hotmail.com, or reach me at 518-928-4932. Jim Ratcliff, league secretary/treasurer.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundOur monthly meeting was held on Friday, April 15, 2022, at our POA clubhouse. We discussed our selection, "The Personal Librarian" by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. This well-researched historical fiction tells the story of Belle da Costa Greene (aka Belle Marion Greener), a young woman of color, who "passes" for white in order to gain the position of personal librarian to the infamous financier, J. P. Morgan in the early 1900's. She was personally responsible for attaining all the priceless, ancient art and medieval manuscripts collection that filled his new, then private library. Our members present conducted a very animated and lengthy discussion about this fascinating, witty, informative, and enlightening story which included the themes of women's suffrage, racism, societal behavior during that time period.

If you love to read and discuss books, then please join us for our next meeting on Friday, May 20, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.

Pickleball - Rick Griffith & Sue Berger

The new pickleball courts are expected to be started around May 2. We expect the courts to be CLOSED for about 3-4 weeks during this process. Hopefully less.

When the NEW Pickleball Courts are finished, we will schedule a "Grand Opening and an Intro to Pickleball Class”. We will also announce our Summer "Open Play" Schedule. This will be in June and more info will be out on this.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgWe have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need do is call or email me!

For those of you who have volunteered to help others by being on the Care Team, here is how you make sure you are getting notifications when I post a request:

How to control all email notification settings (including groups)

1.      Log in to nextdoor.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner.

2.      Select Settings from the drop-down.

3.      Select Notifications from the left menu:

4.      Next to Email Notificationsselect Edit

5.      If you set Updates from your local area to None then you will not receive email notifications from your groups.

6.      If you set it to Only top posts or All you will get an email for every new group post. (choose this one)

Note: Adjusting these settings will affect all your email notifications, not just for groups.

If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. There are not many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they do get! It really does not take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed. So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I will do my best to find someone.

Thank you,
